Masterbatchisaconcentratedmixtureofpigmentsand/oradditivesencapsulatedduringaheatprocessintoacarrierresinwhichisthencooledandcutintoagranularshape. Masterbatchallowstheprocessortocolourrawpolymereconomicallyduringtheplasticsmanufacturingprocess. Therearetwopolymerresinstobeconsidered: CarrierResin, theresininwhichthepigmentsand/oradditivesarecarriedandwhichformsthemasterbatch; DilutionResin,thisisthepolymerorpolymerswhichmakeupthebulkoftheplasticprocessor'sfinishedproduct. Therearethreemaintypesofcolourant: InorganicPigments, thistypeofpigmentismanufacturedfromnaturalrawmaterialsandincludesfundamentaltypessuchastitaniumdioxide,ironoxidesandultramarineblue.Howevermanyarenotsuitableforsomeapplicationssuchaspackagingduetotheirtoxicity.Pigmentsinthiscategoryincludeleadchromiumandcadmium; Organicpigmentsystemsaresynthesisedandtendtohavelowerheatstabilitythaninorganics.Oneofthebigadvantagesofthistypeofpigmentsystemisthattheyarenormallynon-toxicandconformtolegislationrelatingtofoodcontactandsafety. Dyestuffs Theseareman- madesolubledyes,whichareusedextensivelyinfibrecolouring,forexample. Theirgeneraluseislimitedduetotheirincompatibilitywithpolyolefins,buttheycanbeveryeffectiveinstyrenicsandengineeringpolymers.Dyestuffshavegoodcolouringstrength,butcanbeexpensive.
