This Melamine Sponge is also called magic sponge. It has excellent water absorbability and cleaning ability without any detergen. A spot that won't come out, a tough stain you just can't seem to get. You take out your "magic eraser" and get that stain out! That magic eraser is actually made of a substance called melamine foam, compound of chemicals specifically made for its weird texture. Melamine foam forms into a block of solid tiny fibers. Using these, that magic eraser is eroding the stain off the surface. In the early 21st century it was discovered that melamine foam was an effective abrasive cleaner.[citation needed] The open cell foam is microporous and its polymeric substance is very hard, so that when used for cleaning it works like extremely fine sandpaper, getting into tiny grooves and pits in the object being cleaned. On a larger scale the material feels soft. Because the bubbles interconnect, its structure is more like a maze of fibreglass strands, when compared to the array of separate bubbles in a material such as styrofoam, for example. Rubbing with a slightly moistened foam may remove otherwise "uncleanable" external markings from surfaces. For example, it can remove crayon, magic marker, and grease from painted walls, wood finishings, plastic-adhering paints from treated wooden tables, adhesive residue, and grime from hub caps[citation needed]. If the surface being cleaned is not sufficiently hard, it may be finely scratched by the melamine material. The foam wears away, rather like a pencil eraser, leaving behind a slight residue which can be rinsed off. However, melamine foam does not have just one use. It is extremely fireproof, and because of the air between the particles, it can be used as a sound proofer, because it absorbs and blocks sound. Melamine foam is also used as insulation for pipes because it cuts down on noise and vibration. Melamine foam was first used for cleaning purposes, but then the use spread all around. So it seems that from that stain on the floor, to the pipes in your walls, we owe a lot to Melamine foam.
