Tea polyphenols protect tea plants from diseases, and they do the same within the human body when consumed. These antioxidants go to work neutralizing free radicals, the toxins within our bodies caused by stress hormones, pollution, and other nasty elements from our environment. Tea polyphenols, or flavonoids, scavenge for those oxidants and take them out before they can cause cellular damage. 2) Tea polyphenols are linked to prevention of cancer and heart diseases Epidemiologic observations and laboratory studies have indicated that polyphenolic compounds present in tea may reduce the risk of a variety of illnesses, including cancer and coronary heart disease. Most studies involved green tea, however; only a few evaluated black tea. Results from studies in rats, mice, and hamsters showed that tea consumption protects against lung, forestomach, esophagus, duodenum, pancreas, liver, breast, colon, and skin cancers induced by chemical carcinogens. Other studies showed the preventive effect of green tea consumption against atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease, high blood cholesterol concentrations, and high blood pressure. Because the epidemiologic studies and research findings in laboratory animals have shown the chemopreventive potential of tea polyphenols in cancer, the usefulness of tea polyphenols for humans should be evaluated in clinical trials. One such phase 1 clinical trial is currently under way at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in collaboration with Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. This study will examine the safety and possible efficacy of consuming the equivalent of =">10 cups (="> 2.4 L) of green tea per day. The usefulness of tea polyphenols may be extended by combining them with other consumer products such as food items and vitamin supplements. This "designer-item" approach may be useful for human populations. 3) Antibacterial Effects of tea polyphenols The antibacterial effects of tea polyphenols (TPP) against clinical isolates of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) were evaluated. Characterization of the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of oxacillin for 30 S. aureus strains isolated from patients treated with oxacillin identified 13 strains with an oxacillin MIC >/= 4 mug/mL as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) (range: 8 to 512 mug/mL), while 17 strains were methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) (range: 0.25-0.5 mug/mL). The MICs of TPP ranged from 50 to 180mug/mL for both the MSSA and the MRSA strains. The MICs of oxacillin for each of the 13 MRSA strains were reduced between 8- and 128-fold when these strains were coincubated with sub-MIC (</=0.5x MIC) levels of TPP, demonstrating that the combination of TPP plus oxacillin was synergistic for all of the clinical MRSA isolates. Two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis identified 14 extracellular proteins of MRSA-13 down-regulated and 3 proteins up-regulated by exposure to TPP. 3. Tea Polyphenols and Weight Loss The high levels of tea polyphenols in Oolong tea have also been studied as an aid to another health epidemic: obesity. Polyphenols and weight loss are actually linked. According to the International Journal on Obesity3, Oolong tea inhibits intestinal absorption of fat and can be used as an effective aid in weight loss, which could contribute to reducing the risk of obesity. This is one of a number of studies that shows the natural weight loss power of tea polyphenols in Oolong tea. Another by the University Tokushima School of Medicine concluded that Oolong tea restricted fat and carbohydrate absorption while revving up energy metabolism3. With zero calories, this makes Wu-Long tea a fantastic and healthier alternative to diet sodas, and a powerful tool for aiding you in your weight loss goals. Description of tea polyphenolsWidely studied for more than a decade, compounds of polyphenols are found in many plant forms, including tea, wine, nuts, fruits and vegetables. They're responsible for the brightly colored pigment of many fruits and vegetables, but it is the level of polyphenols that makes the difference. Polyphenol content is the highest in the leaves of a plant, which is why tea, including Oolong, green, black and white tea, has received so much acclaim. Containing 10 times the antioxidants found in many fruits and vegetables, the subclass of tea polyphenols is flavonoids, which is the most potent of the plant antioxidants. 1.The cardinal antioxidative ingredient in the green tea extract is green tea catechins (GTC), which comprise four major epicatechin derivatives; namely, epicatechin (EC), epigallocatechin (EGC), epicatechin gallate (ECG), and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) 2.Other components include three kinds of flavonoids, known as kaempferol, quercetin, and myricetin 3.Caffeine may be excluded in green tea extracts in order to avoid side-effects; caffeine-free green tea extract supplements are available nowadays.
