Silicon Carbide is also called moissanite and molecular formula is SiC. Silicon Carbide ores formed under natural conditions are moissanites which have a quite low output. While the artificially synthesized SiSic is fabricated mainly by quartz sand, petroleum coke or coal coke , wood flour, etc via high temperature smelting in electric stove. There are two kinds of Sisic products made out by industrial process – black and green Sisc, which are both hexagonal crystals just with different amount of Sic content and thus a different hardness. Talking in general, the specific gravity of industrial SiSic is among the range 3.20 to 3.25 , microhardness is between 2840 to 3320 kg/mm2. Black SiSic is fabricated mainly by quartz sand, petroleum coke and high quality silica sand via high temperature smelting in electric stove. Black SiSic , whose Sic content is above 95%, has a metal-like shiny surface and a nature of fragility and sharpness. Mechanical strength higher then corundum, hardness between corundum and diamond – weaker than green Sisic, black Sisic are mainly used to grind cast iron and non-metal material. Green SiSic is made mainly by petroleum coke and high quality silica sand via high temperature smelting in electric stove after adding table salt. Sic content of green Sisic is above 97%. Mechanical strength higher then corundum, hardness between corundum and diamond – stronger than black Sisic, green Sisic are mainly used to polish metal tools with a rigid nature . Sisic has an excellent high temperature resistant performance, some of which also possess an rather high degree of hardness, so can be used as antiseptic, wear and temperature resisting material. SiC is the most economical, widely used and most commonly accepted fireproofing material among non-oxidizing materials like C, N, B etc. Fire-resistant SiC has also been called fire-proofing sand or corundum.
