Lovage rhizome Oil Product patent No.: ZL 2006 1 0034708.4 This herb is the rhizome of Ligusticum chuanxiong Hort. (family Umbelliferae) which is manly produced in Sichuan Province. It is collectedin summer, washed clean after getting rid of the hairy rootlets, baked dry, slice, and used unprepared or stir- baked with wine. Pungent in flavour, warm in property, acting on the liver, gallbladder and pericardium channels. Description: Ligusticum chuanxiong oil is extracted from the rhizome of Ligusticum chuanxiong Hort. (Umbelliferae) by CO2 extracted. It is clear, reddish brown liquid. Active constituents: Ligustilide 20-40% (CAS# 4431-01-0), c Rhizoma Chuanxiong (Ligusticum chuanxiong Hort. (Umbelliferae)), known as Chuanxiong in Chinese, a commonly used Traditional Chinese Medicinal (TCM) herb, has been used for treating cardiovascular diseases in China for centuries (China Pharmacopoeia, 2005). In addition to raw herb preparations used in conventional TCM practice, various Chuanxiong based proprietary products containing Chuanxiong crude extract, especially Chuanxiong essential oil extract, are also used clinically. For instance, Quick-acting Heart Saving Pill(Chinese name: Suxiao Jiuxin Wan), a product manufactured for sublingual delivery, contains Chuanxiong essential oil extract as the primary ingredient. In recent years, this product is one of the top five best-selling TCM-based cardiovascular products in China [1,2]. Promote the circulation of blood and vital energy, expel wind and alleviate pain. Pharmacological Actions: Act on the central nervous system: its aqueous solution inhibits mice’s autokinetic movement, prolongs the duration of pentobarbital’ hypnotic action, decreasing the excitement stimulating by Caffeine.Act on cardiovascular system: relaxes the coronary arteries, provides increased blood supply to the heart muscle, decreases the cerebrovascular accidents; Lower blood pressure.Act on the blood system: inhibits the platelet aggregation, reduces the viscosity of the blood, suppresses the thrombosis.Inhibits the growth of intestinal gram-negative bacteria and skin fungi.Inhibits or prevents the growth or development of malignant cells.Clinical Application: It has a satisfactory effect on coronary heart disease, angina, ischemic cerebral vessel diseases, thrombus, headache, hepatitis disease, difficult menstruation; improves visual acuity; prevents chronic mastitis etc.Active constituents: In the past decades, the phytochemistry of Chuanxiong has been studied extensively. Nineteen compounds from L. chuanxiong have been reported to be pharmacologically active [3,9]. In particular, phthalides are present in large quantities in Chuanxiong essential oil; these compounds have been shown to have in vitro and in vivo pharmacological activities [10,14] . Ligustilide, a phthalide derivative, is the most abundant constituent in the herb [15,18]. Vasodilatation, anti-platelet aggregation, anti-thrombotic, serotonergic activity and anti-proliferative properties of ligustilide have been well documented [3,14,19]. Hence, ligustilide is considered to be a key active ingredient in Chuanxiong. Pharmacology Effects on the cardio-cerebral vascular system Effects on the heart: Chuanxiongzine, a Chuan Xiong extract, has dosage-specific inhibitory effect on isolated hamster hearts. This inhibitory effect, however, does not seem to significantly affect the heartbeat rate. [6] Effects on blood vessels and the blood pressure: Chuanxiongzine can inhibit thoracic aorta's contraction that is induced by noradrenalin, potassium chloride, or calcium chloride. It can also dilate pulmonary vessels in rats, inhibit pulmonary vessel contraction due to oxygen deprivation, and right ventricle hypertrophy. [9] Effects on the volume of coronary blood flow: Both Chuan Xiong and chuanxiongzine can significantly increase the volume of coronary blood flow in isolated hearts of rats and hamsters Effects on the blood system Experiments on rabbits show that Chuan Xiong and chuanxiongzine can significantly inhibit blood platelet aggregation induced by ADP, collagen and thrombase. Chuanxiongzine can inhibit the activation of platelets in extracorporeal circulation and the formation of arterial thrombus.[8] Effects on the urinary system Chuanxiongzine can significantly increase renal blood flow in rabbits, an effect that is dosage-specific. Chuanxiongzine is also an effective diuretic. Experiments on rabbits and rats show that chuanxiongzine also has a moderate therapeutic effect on Masugi nephritis, experimental membranous nephritis, and in-situ nephritis.[11] Effects on the immune system Chuanxiongzine can strengthen the phagocytic function of mononuclear phagocytes in mice, increase lymphocytes' transformation rate in rats, and the percentage of positive results in ANAE testing. It can also promote the formation of sheep red blood cell (SRBC) antibody in mice. Dosage 3-10g decoction; 1-1.5g powder infusion; or in powder or pill form. Toxicity LD50 (mice/IV injection/chuanxiongzine): 239mg/kg
