Chemical Characteristics a. Hydrolysis reaction: In water, Benzonitrile can be proceessed into benzoyal amide after hydrolysis; at the presence of potassium, it is hydrolyzed to benzoic acid; under reaction of zinc chloride and hydrochloric acid, it becomes benzaldehyde. b. Reductionreaction: Benzonitrile can be reduced to benzyl amine with additiom of hydrogen. c. Addition reaction: Benzoguanamine can be prepared in organic solvents with benzontrile and dicyandiamide as reactant and aklali compound as catalyst. 3. Major Application a. Benzonitrile is an important chemical intermediate, it can be used in preparation of benzoguanamine, sunthesis of pesticides, intermediates of aliphatic amine and benzoic acid; also applied as solvent with high boiling for printing ink and resin, antioxidant, solvent for dye staff and additive for powder coatings. b. The quality of melamine plastic can be greatly improved by preparing benzoguanamine from benzonitrile and dicyandiamide under alkali condition. Benzoguanamine ban be further processsed into benzoguanamine resin for coating, adhesives, laminate board and moulding materials. c. Benzonitrile can be processed into benzoyl amide after hydrolysis and futher processed into benzoic acid, used as plasticizer, organic intermediate of coatings and polymers. d. Benzyl amine, used as intermediate of pharmaceuticals, can be prepared by the reduction of benzonitrile. e. Benzonitrile is emulsified with nonionic surfactant and its emulsion may be applied as dyeing additives of synthetic fiber. f. Benzonitrile can be used as additive for fuel of jet engines. 4.
