Dome Array, Metal Dome Array, Dome Arrays A dome array is a switch contact system comprised of either metal dome switches, or embossed polyester contacts with printed conductors. This type of contact system is utilized in membrane switches, printed circuit keyboards, polyimide switch systems, and many other types of front panel assemblies. The metal tactile element is pre-plated with tin, nickel, or gold, and then stamped. Most often, the dome array is part of the switch contact system, and is encased in the switch assembly to provide a "snap" or tactile response when the switch is actuated. This design ensures that the moment of tactile response more closely coincides with the moment of contact. A polyester tactile element is manufactured using a silver-printed polyester sheet. The silver printing is primarily in the switch contact area, and is formed into the upper region of the tactile element either thermally, mechanically, or using both processes. The advantage of a dome array is the positive feedback a user receives when the front panel assembly is operated. The snap response lets the user know that switch closure has occurred, and is often used in applications not including an audio feedback. Cycle life on dome arrays can vary, depending on the contact system used (metal or formed polyester), and the contact plating and design employed on the mating printed circuit board or printed contact substrate.
