L-Arginine L-pyroglutamate, also known as pirglutargine and arginine pidolate, is the L-arginine salt of pyroglutamic acid. Arginine pyroglutamate is a delivery form of pyroglutamate, a naturally occurring amino acid that can be derived from vegetables, fruit, dairy products and meat. Arginine has been widely used because of its role in synthesis of urea, nitric oxide (NO), and creatine. This makes arginine and related amino acids useful in treating insufficiencies of the urea cycle (e.g. hyperammonemia in liver failure, insufficiensies in NO production, and inborn errors of creating synthesis involving deffects in arginine: glycine amidinotransference and guanidinoacetate methyltransferase. The ability of arginine to stimulate the pancreatic and pituitary axis has been used to alleviate growth retardation in children and to promote growth hormone release in endurance athletes or body builders.
