Over the years, the leftover empty fruit bunch (EFB) fiber of oil palm after the processing of harvested oil palm fruit is always deemed as garbage to throw aside or burn out. Thousands and thousands tons of EFB fiber not only pollute the environment but also cause unbounded waste of resource. Under the promotion to dream of green environment, Shanghai Power Pulp&Paper Engineering Co.,Ltd has already studied out to utilize these leftover EFB fiber to make pulp & paper well. Under remorseless researching, the company has succeeded in developing the innovative technology and productive process to manufacture high quality products of sheet pulp, sanitary tissue, culture paper, packing paper an so on from extracted EFB fiber. The company exclusively has this research and development results of innovative technology. At the same time, the company as a main contract mode is builting up a pulp & paper mill, in which oil palm fiber is used for raw material, in Malaysia. The pulp & paper mill project in Sabah East- Malaysia is expected to put into commercial operation in August 2011. In August 2001, the company applied for the innovation patent on “The palm fruit bunch hull utilized technology on pulp & paper”, and it has achieved the authorization of State Intellectural Property Office in May 2004, the patent number is 01126541.8; and also it has achieved the international patent, which class number is D21C3/02. The compant has adopted advanced devices, strict screening technology, and compact pulping treatment so as to ensure the pulp ingredients in different products appear minimum differentiation, whilst noticeably reducing the strenuous exertion on the environment throughout its manufacturing process. The cost of pulping with palm EFB fiber is inexpensive and the sheet pulp cost per metric ton is only $250 USD more or less. This pulping process is thus more competitive than the traditional wood pulping process, so that it is very worthwhile to put investment on this business. Utilizing palm EFB fiber to manufacture pulp & paper that does not only have an obvious economic significance to turn harm to good and turn waste to wealth, but also have a huge ecological significance. To manufacture pulp & paper with palm EFB fiber can largely save woods and protect tropical rain forests in Southeast Asia, and thus further reduce CO2 volume in atomosphere. According to the annual capacity of palm EFB fiber in Indonesia now, it could output 3.9 million tons of unbleached palm EFB fiber chemical pulp; if the calculation based on this data that the yield of hardwood unbleached chemical pulp is about 43%, total dry biomass of planted broad-leaved forest above the earth can be 41.6t/hm2, and the availability of biomass used for making paper is 85%, then consequently it should replace about 26 million hectares of planted broad-leaved forest annually. Following the development of palm oil industry, the EFB fiber pulp & paper industry shall be more potential in future and save more planted forest area. If this industry expanded to whole Southeast Asia or all tropical zone upon earth, it could protect a wide range of tropical rain forest, in other words, it had protected the cardio-pulmonary function of earth; this significance for environmental protection is extremely important and the prospect is more brilliant as well. Recently, one of the company subordinate enterprises - Shanghai Qingliang Industrial Co., LTD has developed a high speed tissue paper machine with operating speed 1100m/min and thus successfully kept away from the monopoly of Europe and Japan; as a result it has created a foundation to cause palm EFB fiber pulp & paper developing with industrialization and large scale effect.
