Calcium Fluoride shows good thermal-mechanical properties. It is widely used for optical windows, lenses and prisms in the 0.15 μm - 9 μm ranges. For its low absorption and low refractive index CaF2 has found wide application in high power laser optics and can be used without anti-reflection coating. Calcium Fluoride is now considered as important material UV optical material, e. g. As Excimer laser windows. Available doped with europium as a gamma ray scintillator. Under normal conditions polished surfaces of CaF2 are stable and will last several years. The natural form of CaF2 is known as Fluorite. Synthesized CaF2 is grown by modified vacuum Bridgman technique. Material for IR application is grown using naturally mined fluorite, in large quantities at relatively low cost.
